Have You Evolved?

Charles Darwin, best known for his theories of evolution, said “It’s not the strongest of the species, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is most adaptable to change”.

There is no question that the internet has changed the way people buy, and subsequently the way you should sell. But beware of those who would suggest we’re experiencing a marketing revolution…..we’re simply undergoing a marketing evolution.

One example of this evolution is word of mouth advertising. Word of mouth has always been invaluable to marketers; it’s free, and it’s credible when a friend recommends a business.

Thanks to the advent of social media, we now have word of mouth on steroids. In the old face to face world, a delighted customer might have told three or four friends about you, but today, with the click of a mouse, they can tell three or four hundred friends.

But here’s the thing, a revolution would indicate overthrowing everything we previously knew about marketing. But in evolution, the basics remain the same while continuing to develop and improve.

In the evolution of marketing, the basics remain constant. For example, the way you get good word of mouth advertising, either in person or online, is to surprise and delight your customers.

Darwin also said “Pay special attention to evidence that contradicts your beliefs” But we all suffer from adhering to our beliefs and resisting any evidence that contradicts them.

Those who believe we’re experiencing a marketing revolution, rather than an evolution, for example, might have you believe that none of the tried and proven basics create results any longer, in spite of evidence to the contrary.

But the most basic of basic marketing pillars, the Marketing Funnel, is more relevant and can be more productive for small and medium sized businesses than ever before.
