Something Old, Something New

There is a huge appetite for new technology in marketing today. Part of the appeal seems to be that it comes, and goes, so fast. Remember fax machines? Or how about Palm Pilots; they were going to be our personal digital assistants forever.

Remember MySpace? From 2005 to 2008, MySpace was the most visited social media site on the planet. It’s now just one of dozens and dozens of social sites.

As exciting as new media are, there are some old wisdoms that stand the test of time. One such wisdom is, “Don’t put all of your eggs in one basket”, meaning don’t risk it all in one place.

Successful advertisers have understood this wisdom for years. Long before the internet replaced print, marketing research proved that everything from newspaper ads to coupon envelops, from flyers to yellow directories created better results when used in combination with intrusive media like radio.
